AWS Launches AI Business Strategist Certification: What You Need to Know
AWS has officially launched its first business-category certification: AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01). Unlike every other AWS certification that targets technical practitioners — developers, architects, engineers — this one is built specifically for business leaders, executives, product managers, and other non-technical professionals who need to understand AI without writing code.
If you've been waiting for an AWS credential that validates strategic AI decision-making rather than hands-on implementation, this is it.
Why AWS created a business-focused AI certification
AWS's existing AI certifications — AI Practitioner (AIF-C01), Machine Learning Engineer Associate (MLA-C01), and Machine Learning Specialty (MLS-C01) — all assume you'll be building, deploying, or directly operating AI systems. That's fine for technical roles, but it leaves a gap for the people who actually decide whether to adopt AI, where to apply it, and how to measure its business impact.
The AI Business Strategist certification fills that gap. It's designed for professionals who:
- Lead AI adoption initiatives without being the ones implementing them
- Need to evaluate AI investments and measure ROI
- Make decisions about AI governance, ethics, and risk management
- Communicate AI strategy to stakeholders and executive teams
- Work with technical teams but don't code or configure AWS services directly
AWS explicitly states this certification requires "no coding or technical implementation knowledge" — a first for any AWS certification.
Exam details: AIB-C01
Here's what the exam looks like, pulled directly from AWS's official exam guide:
|
AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) |
| Questions |
65 total (50 scored, 15 unscored) |
| Format |
Multiple choice, multiple response |
| Duration |
130 minutes |
| Scoring |
Scaled 100–1000, pass at 700 |
| Price |
US$100 (standard) / US$50 (beta) |
| Recertification |
Every 3 years |
The 15 unscored questions are AWS testing new questions for future exam versions — you won't know which ones they are, and they don't affect your score.
At 130 minutes, this exam is longer than the foundational-level certifications (Cloud Practitioner and AI Practitioner both run 90 minutes), giving you more time per question to work through the scenario-based prompts that dominate business-focused exams.
Beta opportunity: half price + Early Adopter badge
AWS is currently running a beta period for the AI Business Strategist exam. If you take and pass the exam before February 15, 2027, you'll receive:
- 50% off the exam fee — US$50 instead of US$100
- Early Adopter digital badge — a permanent distinction on your certification profile showing you passed during the beta window
Beta exams are identical in format and scoring to the production version. The only difference is the discounted price and the badge. Once the beta window closes, the exam moves to standard pricing and the Early Adopter badge is no longer available.
If you're already considering this certification, the beta window is the obvious time to take it.
The four exam domains
AWS structures the AI Business Strategist exam into four weighted domains. Here's what each one covers:
Domain 1: Fundamentals of AI for Business (20%)
This domain tests your understanding of core AI concepts from a business perspective — not how AI works technically, but what it can and can't do, and how it fits into business operations. Expect questions on:
- Basic AI and machine learning terminology
- Differences between traditional software and AI systems
- Common AI use cases across industries
- Limitations and realistic expectations for AI capabilities
Domain 2: Fundamentals of Generative AI for Business (24%)
Generative AI is the fastest-moving area in AI right now, and AWS has weighted it accordingly. This domain covers:
- What generative AI is and how it differs from traditional ML
- Foundation models and large language models (LLMs)
- Business applications of generative AI (content generation, summarization, code assistance)
- Understanding model capabilities, limitations, and appropriate use cases
- AWS generative AI services from a business perspective (Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Q)
Domain 3: Value and Business Metrics of AI Initiatives (28%)
This is the largest domain — over a quarter of the exam — and it's where the "business strategist" focus really shows. Questions here test your ability to:
- Identify business problems suitable for AI solutions
- Build business cases for AI investments
- Define and measure AI project success metrics
- Calculate and communicate ROI for AI initiatives
- Manage AI project risks from a business perspective
- Align AI initiatives with broader business strategy
Domain 4: Responsible AI and Security for Business (28%)
Tied for the largest domain, this section reflects the growing importance of AI governance and ethics. Topics include:
- Responsible AI principles and frameworks
- AI bias, fairness, and transparency considerations
- Data privacy and compliance requirements
- Security considerations for AI systems
- AI governance structures and policies
- Regulatory and legal considerations for AI adoption
- Building trust and managing stakeholder concerns
The equal weighting of Domain 3 (business metrics) and Domain 4 (responsible AI) tells you exactly what AWS thinks business strategists need to master: proving AI value and managing AI risk.
Who should take this exam?
Based on the domain breakdown and AWS's stated target audience, this certification makes the most sense for:
- Business executives and directors making AI investment decisions
- Product managers evaluating AI features for their products
- Project managers leading AI adoption initiatives
- Business analysts assessing AI opportunities and building business cases
- Consultants and advisors helping clients with AI strategy
- Non-technical founders building AI-powered products
- Sales and marketing leaders working with AI tools and vendors
If your role involves deciding whether and where to use AI — rather than how to build it — this certification validates exactly that skill set.
Who this exam is NOT for
If you're a developer, data scientist, or ML engineer who wants to prove hands-on AI skills on AWS, this isn't the right certification. Look at:
- AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) — foundational technical AI knowledge
- Machine Learning Engineer Associate (MLA-C01) — building and deploying ML models
- Machine Learning Specialty (MLS-C01) — advanced ML implementation
The AI Business Strategist certification complements these technical credentials — a technical team member might hold ML Engineer while their product manager holds AI Business Strategist — but it doesn't replace them.
How to prepare
Since this is a business-focused exam, preparation looks different from typical AWS certifications. You won't be memorizing service limits or configuring IAM policies. Instead:
1. Study the exam guide thoroughly
AWS's official AI Business Strategist exam guide breaks down exactly what's tested in each domain. Read it carefully — for a business exam, the domain descriptions often contain the concepts you'll be tested on.
2. Understand AI fundamentals conceptually
You don't need to understand backpropagation or transformer architectures. You do need to understand:
- What AI can realistically accomplish today
- How generative AI differs from traditional ML
- Common failure modes and limitations
- When AI is the right solution vs. when it isn't
3. Focus on business metrics and ROI
Domain 3 is 28% of the exam. Practice thinking through:
- How to define success metrics for AI projects
- How to build a business case for AI investment
- How to measure and communicate AI ROI to stakeholders
- How to identify projects that are good candidates for AI
4. Learn responsible AI frameworks
Domain 4 is also 28%. AWS has published extensive guidance on responsible AI — study:
- AWS's responsible AI principles
- Bias detection and mitigation (conceptually, not technically)
- Data privacy requirements (GDPR, CCPA, industry-specific regulations)
- AI governance best practices
5. Practice with scenario-based questions
Business exams rely heavily on scenario questions: "A company wants to implement AI for X. The stakeholder asks Y. What should you recommend?" Practice applying concepts to realistic business situations.
